You meet some trouble on your Dell laptop because the C partition is full? You want to increase the size of C drive but you hope to look for a way to extend its space without needing to reformat the hard drive on Dell computer? The available space on a C partition will be occupied as long as you boot your computer, even if you do not save any file to this partition.
How does the free space on C drive get eaten up?
1. First of all, when you install an operating system, it will occupy much free space on C drive. And the C drive space will be occupied every time you install Windows updates on your computer.
2. When you download and install any program on Dell laptop, the Windows system automatically installs the program on C drive. Therefore, the C drive space might be eaten up when you install more and more programs to this partition.
3. In addition to Windows OS and some programs you installed to C drive, the space on this partition might also be occupied by Internet temporary files, recycle bin files, log files, setup files, cookies and caches, etc. Those files only occupy little free space, but it still has influence when C drive is extremely full on Dell laptop.
Solution for C Drive Increasing on Dell Laptop
On all Windows platform, you can try to reinstall system to repartition hard disk to increase the size of C drive on Dell laptop. With this method, you usually need to backup data first and then reinstall operating system. Then, you need to repartition hard drive and repartition hard drive for reallocating disk space. Then, is there any way to extend C drive without reinstall and reformat hard drive on Dell laptop?
You can run Disk Management to extend C drive if Dell PC runs Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10 and Windows Server 2008, 2012, SBS 2008, 2012, Windows 2008 R2, 2012 R2. Usually, you only need to perform three simple 2 steps to expand C drive without formatting on Dell laptop:
Step1. Run Disk Management on Dell laptop. Right click the partition shows behind C drive and click Delete Volume to delete the selected partition (please remember to backup this drive before deleting it).
Step2. You can see an unallocated volume showing behind C drive after deleting the selected partition. Now, right click C drive and click Extend Volume to add the unallocated space to C drive.
You cannot shrink partition to create unallocated space in order to ensure that the unallocated partition is contiguous and on the right side of C drive.
Disk Management is powerful and easy to handle, but some Windows does not support to extend partition with Disk Management. You will fail to extend system partition with Windows XP Disk Management. In this situation, you may come up with another Windows built-in tool, namely Diskpart command. Diskpart command works on all Windows platform including Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 and Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012, SBS 2003, 2008, 2012, Windows 2003 R2, 2008 R2, 2012 R2, etc. However, the bad thing is that Diskpart cannot extend system partition on any platform, so you cannot use Diskpart command to extend C drive without reformatting hard disk on Dell laptop.
If you fail to expand C drive by Disk Management or Diskpart command on Dell laptop, you may use partition software to fix the low disk space problem without reformatting hard disk drive.
