How to repartition/resize c drive in windows server 2008 r2 sbs 2008

If you are a windows server 2008 R2 user and reading this article, there are greater chances that you are fond of using the efficient features of SBS but still fed up of the “low disk space” problem. Unfortunately, server 2008 R2 SBS does not allow you to resize the partitions at the time of windows installations. The high-grade features and constant updates of the SBS 2008 consumes a lot of GBs in c-drive – thus resulting in low disk space in system drive.

As Windows Server 2008 R2 is often used in offices, one cannot compromise to format and then resize the partition. Have you been looking for ways to repartition or resize the system partition while the OS and application programs in c-drive remains untouched? Well, you have come to the right place. We will show you how to resize server 2008.

Resize partition with Disk Management

Windows Server 2008 R2 comes with a built-in partition resizer tool called Disk Management. Disk management utility in SBS 2008 R2 allows you to repartition or resize disk partitions effectively. To repartition c-drive, follow the steps below

Open the Disk Management

Determine if the data partitions present on the system has enough space to resize system partition

Shrink space from the data partition

This space will be grayed out and is called unallocated space

Click on the c-drive and add unallocated space to c-drive

Note that unallocated space can only be added to c-drive if it is present right next to c-drive – this is where disk management lacks. If there is another partition between c-drive and unallocated space, you cannot resize/extend c-drive. In such cases, it is recommended to use a third-party software, IM-Magic Partition Resizer .
