Repartition hard drive server 2016

Re-partition means you want to recreate partitions from the existing drives. The repartition is required when you want to have more drives or you want to expand your existing drives. You can repartition server 2016 from the disk management tool. You need to save your data on other drives or any external storage device and then format your drive which you want to repartition. When you format, an unallocated space is created and from this unallocated space you can create one or more drives. This is one of the easiest method to repartition drive. In this case you are loosing data as you are formatting your drives.

You want to repartition your drive without data loss. You have enough free space in other drives. You can go to disk management and shrink your drive(s) having enough space. When you shrink, an uanllocated space is created from the available free space of your drive and thus data is not lost. You can create a named partition from this unallocated space partition.

If you want to expand your drives, then repartitioning using disk management tool is not useful. The first repartition option by formatting the drives will make the data removed. When you shrink one drive, an unallocated space is created next to the same drive. For example you want to expand your C drive by shrinking your D drive. An unallocated space is created next to D drive. To expand your C drive, unallocated space is required very next to C drive. You do not have option in Windows 2016 built-in disk management tool to move the unallocated space.
