Why you need to resize C drive

Resizing C drive in sbs 2011 is a critical and important task. Your software and operating system files are stored in C drive. Windows installs large number of updates and fixes on regular basis on C drive.. The temporary and error files are also generated on this partition. The space crisis is always a challenge.

Removing unwanted files and programs and running disk cleanup are one of the recommended method to release space in C drive. But this does not resolve the disk space issue. The C drive space issue does not allow you to install critical updates and sometimes you are unable to run few programs.

In such scenarios, you must extend your C drive. When you have enough space in your hard disk , you can resize your partition by taking free space from other drives. This method is called extending drives. Extending C drive allows you to increase the space without adding any other hard disk or removing programs.

How to extend C drive

Windows sbs 2011 comes with built-in disk management tool. This tool helps you in resizing C drive. To extend your C drive, you must have unallocated space right side of your C drive. Go to disk management tool and if you can see unallocated space next to C drive, right click C partition and select extend and then enter the amount of space you want to expand.

If you don’t have unallocated space right side of your C drive then you cannot extend your C drive using disk management without loosing data. The shrinking of next drive too does not help you. The unallocated space created by shrinking the other drive creates an unallocated partition next to it not to C drive. There is no move partition capability in disk management.

If you are ready to loose data from the drive next your C drive, then you can delete that partition. This creates an uanllocated space near to C drive. Since it is your Windows SBS server and you must be keeping important business files, I do not recommend you to delete and loose the data.

Instead of using built-in disk management tool, I recommend you use third party software called IM-Magic Partition Resizer.

The software does disk resizing quickly and effortlessly. Download and Install the trial version. Open IM-Magic Partition Resizer Server edition/unlimited edition. You see your partitions on your hard disk.

In our case that we discussed above, we need to shrink a drive first, call it D drive. To do this, right-click D drive, select resize/move partition.

In the next step, move the left border to right. By moving the border, you are shrinking your D drive as well as creating unallocated space to the right side of C drive.
