Unable to Extend Volume at Disk Management

Extend drive in Volume Disk Management server 2016 does not work most of the times. The in-built Windows disk management utility has many limitations and does not perform the tasks that you mostly want to do like extending your drive.

There is a possibility that you would be able to extend your volume from Disk Management server 2016 when the unallocated space is adjacent to your drive that you want to extend. When you click on the drive, you see the extend option enabled. Selecting extend option will do your job.

However, generally the extend volume is grayed out which means you cannot extend the drive despite having enough space on your hard disk. Why? Having enough space on hard disk does not mean you would be able to extend your drives from disk management tool.

You might be having different partitions in your system and to extend your drive, you can shrink one or many drives and allocate the freed up space to the drive. But the unallocated space created must be next to your target drive. For example you go to disk management tool and shrink the D drive which is next to C drive. The shrink creates an unallocated space next to D drive and not to C drive. If it is not next to C drive, you cannot allocate it to C drive. The extend volume is grayed out on C drive.

To make the C drive or any drive extendable, the unallocated space must be next to drive that you want to expand.

Find Another Way to Fix it: Partition Management Tool

In Disk management tool, there is no option to move the unallocated space adjacent to drive which you want to expand. The only option left is to delete the partition which is next to target drive and then get the partition extended. But there are obstacles which will not allow you to do this, for example C drive is NTFS formatted and D drive is FAT formatted. You cannot extend your C drive. Both should have same file system. So make sure the file system matches before deleting the partition.

You will never want to format the drive to match the file system of C drive. Formatting will erase all your data.

You still want to extend your drive. Use some good and user-friendly third party software. Like you can use IM-Magic Partition Resizer Server edition. The tool will allow you to move the unallocated space next to any drive and that will make your extend job possible.
