Cannot extend c drive in Windows server 2008 disk management

The extend option is disabled or grayed out when you try to extend your C drive. You have enough unallocated space but then why are you not allowed to extend your C drive? C drive can be allocated space only if your unallocated partition is next to C drive.

You cannot extend c drive as extend c drive option is grayed out in Windows Disk management tool. Windows server 2008 disk management cannot extend volume if your unallocated space is not adjacent to C drive. You do not have option to move move your unallocated partition next to C drive in disk management tool.

If you still want to use Disk management tool or diskpart, then you must delete your next drive , for example D drive, which is next to C drive. You can backup your data from D drive on any other drives or external storage device and then delete the drive. Deleting will create unallocated space next to C drive and you will be able to extend your C drive. The extend option is enabled.

If the deleted partition (D drive) is not NTFS then you must format your D drive with NTFS to extend your C drive. You can not uninstall most of the programs as this is Windows server and your business supporting programs run on this. You have your server programs like Oracle Server or Mail Exchange server installed or a website hosted. They need big partition size as the data grows day by day.

Use some good third party disk management tools that will help you in extending your C drive in Windows server 2008 without loosing your data or uninstalling important programs.
