Introduction

Merging partition is not a easy decision. To merge one partition with the other, you need to delete the other partition but then you lose the data. If you are unable to free sufficient space on C drive even after performing the cleanup activity, then you must take the space from other partition. But this is not easy.

How to merge two drives in windows server 2008

As I said merging is not easy as it looks. True that you gain enough space on C drive or other drive by merging process. But you never want to delete your data on D drive. If oyu still want to delete and create space, you must take take a backup of data of D drive.. But what if your programs are installed on D drive. You need to re-install them.

Instructions to Merge unallocated space server 2008

When you delete a partition next to target drive, let say C drive, you are deleting D drive and creating unallocated space next to C drive. You can use Windows disk management tool or any other third party tool to combine the partitions. In disk management tool, you have to right click on D rive and select delete. You will see unallocated space created next to D drive. You right click on C drive partition and select extend and thats it! You C drive is extended. You can do the same thing from other third party software.

It is not a wise decision to delete a partition to create space for the other drive when you already have enough free space or unallocated space on your hard disk. You are allowed to merge only unallocated space and which is next to target drive. Either you have unallocated space or you shrink the other drives and create it. But as the target drive can be merged only when the unallocated space is on its right side. If you are creating unallocated space by shrinking other drive, it is not created next to your target drive. So you shrink D drive, unalloacted space is created next to D drive not to C drive.

This is one of the limitations of disk management tool. You must move you unallocated space next to your C drive if you want to exted your C partition. This is when the third party comes in the picture. The tools are smart and move and extend your drive without much effort.

Combine two partitions windows 2008:

Normally PCs or laptops have one hard disk. If you have multiple disks and you want to merge the partition from one hard disk to another partition hard disk, you need to perform some extra but easy and doable steps.

1.Combine two partitions on the same disk: It is a common situation you want to merge two chunks from the same hard disk. You can shrink or delete one partition(remember to take backup of data) and create an unallocated space. If the unallocated space is available next to target drive, you can simply select extend after clicking the right mouse button in Windows built-in disk management tool. If it is not next to your target drive, then you can use third party tool.

2.Combine two partitions on the different disks. If want to merge two partitions from different hard disks, the step remains the same for creating unallocated space by deleting one partition from one hard disk. Click the target drive and select extend. You can follow the below steps:
